Building Public Interest AI - Current AI's next chapter

At the AI Action Summit in Paris, we saw a clear signal that the world is ready for a different future for AI, one that is open, inclusive, and aligned with democratic values.

Thanks to the global momentum and leadership of the summit, Current AI secured an over $400 million initial investment, highlighting the scale of ambition behind efforts to build AI in the public interest.

We’re now entering the next critical stage: laying the foundations for a robust and effective organisation. Over the next 6 months, our focus will be on building out governance and shaping strategy. This “start-up phase” is also about getting the operational basics right - legally, logistically.

Today, we are proud to announce the formation of the Current AI Interim Committee, the group of core partners of the Initiative who will guide our governance, partnerships, and growth through this critical “start-up phase”.

Meet the Interim Committee

We are honoured to be guided by a group of leaders:

  • Eric Sears, Director, Technology in the Public Interest, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
  • Lori McGlinchey, Director, Technology and Society Program, The Ford Foundation
  • Nick Cain, Vice President of Strategy & Innovation, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation
  • Shahla Naimi, Policy Director in the Office of Ethical and Humane Use, Salesforce
  • French government: Arno Amabile, Advisor to the Special Envoy for the AI Action Summit, alternating with Arthur Barichard, Deputy Ambassador for Digital Affairs
  • Martin Tisné, CEO, AI Collaborative (Chair)
  • Claire Foulquier-Gazagnes, Senior Advisor, AI Collaborative (Committee Secretary)
“With deep collaboration across the public and private sectors, we can build an AI ecosystem that truly serves the public interest. I’m excited for what’s ahead.” - Martin Tisné, Chair of the Interim Committee at Current AI

As we move forward, this moment is about building the systems that will ensure AI works in service of the public interest. We know this won’t be achieved by any one organisation. It will take coordinated action, long-term investment, and collaboration across sectors and borders.

That’s why our focus will remain on supporting:

  • Openness: supporting open standards and tools that make AI accessible and adaptable for everyone
  • Data: unlocking access to valuable datasets in media, health, and education to empower local solutions and innovation
  • Accountability: ensuring transparency and trust through public-interest auditing and oversight

We look forward to working with partners, funders, and innovators around the world to make this vision a reality.
