Current AI's next chapter

Dear friends,

When we launched Current AI at the AI Action Summit in Paris, there was a sense of shared momentum and ambition. It was clear that the world is ready to focus on the societal outcome of AI, rather than solely its economical outcomes.

Thanks to global support, we secured an over $400 million initial investment to begin building the public interest AI that we need.

The opportunity and the urgency

The conversation in Paris made one thing clear, to achieve the best out of AI, society must be in charge. For that to happen, the building blocks of AI - the data that powers these models and the models themselves - must serve and be shaped by the public interest.

The global AI race is evolving fast — and with it, a rare and exciting opportunity for open, transparent, and accountable AI infrastructure to gain ground. From the release of powerful open models to the focus on renewable energy in AI, we are seeing encouraging signs.

This is the moment to act, and to act together. Building a truly public-interest future for AI will only be possible with global collaboration. Our work is only just beginning.

What’s next for Current AI

Over the next year, we are focused on laying a foundation for long-term impact:

  • Strengthening our leadership and governance, with the Interim Committee now in place and a permanent independent structure underway for 2025.
  • Launching our first three programmatic pilots to test and refine public-interest approaches to AI

Looking ahead

We have a rare window to build something different, to ensure that AI strengthens societies rather than divides them, empowers communities rather than concentrates power, and opens new opportunities rather than closes them off.

I’m grateful to everyone who helped bring Current AI to life and excited to work together as we move into this next chapter.

Thank you for being part of this effort.
