We’re building the public-interest AI stack
Resilience matters enormously in AI infrastructure. The current proprietary stack is fragile: one company's policy change, one geopolitical shift propagates instantly to millions of dependent users.
Together with our global partnership we will launch the first vertically integrated, open and auditable AI system built in the public interest.
Our job is not to build everything. Our job is to ensure the right people are at the table, build where critical gaps exist, and invest in interoperability wherever strong open-source foundations already exist.
AI Potluck
The public interest AI movement has more talent, institutional goodwill, and political momentum than at any point in its history. And yet dozens of organizations are pursuing similar missions, approaching the same funders, having the same conversations — in parallel, not together. The ingredients exist. What's missing is a shared table.
The dominant metaphor for AI is the race. For the public interest movement, this is a trap: by race logic, we are already behind and should not bother trying. We propose a different metaphor. Every culture has a version of the shared meal. You bring your best. You don't hold back a secret ingredient. No single guest can ruin the meal by withdrawing. Individual excellence produces collective abundance, with no single chef, funder, or owner.
We mapped the AI stack and created the Gap Map, and together with our contributors we built a working chat prototype of an open, public-interest AI product.
We are looking for builders, funders, and community leaders to join us in the sprint to build a viable public option for AI.

Today, we unveil the VYOMA Innovation Challenge: An Open-Source Multilingual Handheld AI Innovation Challenge, which invites hardware and software hackers, inventors, linguists, and researchers in India to extend, modify, and reimagine what this device could be.
